Re: “In Praise of Oakland’s Koreana Plaza

Thank you for highlighting one of the gems of Oakland (and well deserved). We shop there weekly. The owners have done a lot of work to revitalized that part of town.

Re: “As People of Color Disappear from Oakland, So Do My Memories

Maybe you should lobby the company you work for to exercise their power differently: Kapor Center which was started by the principals of Kapor Capital; are major investors in tech (148 companies in total) including angel investors for Uber. The Uber HQ opening next year will bring even more rapid changes to Oakland. I personally don't see this stopping but you should at least recognize who you work for. I also didn't understand this sentence: "I miss greeting strangers as I walk by them in the neighborhood." Who is stopping you from greeting strangers as you walk by them?

Re: “Why Does the Berkeley City Council Care About a Dog Meat Festival in China?

Pigs are smarter and more trainable than dogs. They are even smarter than 3YO humans in cognition tests yet we still torture and eat them. Maybe these "activists" should focus on home fires before telling some other country what to eat.

Re: “Oakland Cops Quietly Acquired Social Media Surveillance Tool

Much ado about nothing here. If users actually bothered to read the privacy policies about data collection including location they might change what they say on these "free" third party services. I see no expectation of privacy if you are shouting what you are doing on one of these public "free" services. These third party services (e.g. FB, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) are nothing but a digital version of being in a town square standing on a soap box and proselytizing passers by. OPD is actually smart to utilize these tools that by the way also happen to be available for anyone to use. I'd be surprised if they were not: It's no different than a cop walking a beat except it's virtual.

Re: “Oakland Housing Emergency

Talk about unintended circumstances: This is no victory. Anyone who thinks so is fooling themselves. Rents will soar even higher now. This ruling only applies to buildings built before 1983. So the effect will be the remaining rental pool will become even more expensive since it is exempt. In addition any older units that come on the market through a vacancy will rent for even more to offset lost income from the other units. Kaplan alludes to all of this when she mentions there is state law to overcome in the Costa Hawkins Rental Housing Act.
This is all just bad policy and if it goes past 90 days look out. But to unravel this there are some insurmountable challenges for the city. Like prop 13, a lack of new construction and the desire for everyone to live in/near cities.
Here we are 7 years into an economic boom and Oakland is still trying to figure out how to house the 1000's new residents making home here. Build more, build now, build tomorrow.
If you look at Houston TX they have made it incredibly easy to do development. Does Houston have challenges? Sure, but expensive housing is not one of them. They have the 3rd lowest cost of living in the USA. Why? Because they made commerce easy.
Disclosure: I am not a landlord nor do I have any financial interests in properties rented/leased out to third parties.

Re: “Progressive Coalition Forms in Oakland to Campaign for Three Ballot Initiatives

Unless a $20/hour minimum wage was instituted across the entire bay area this would just crush small businesses in Oakland. The price difference in goods and services would be great enough (30%-50% difference in labor costs) to send residents to surrounding communities to shop. It would also stifle the creation of small business here. Small businesses generate the majority of jobs. A $20/hour minimum wage would push labor costs higher across the pay spectrum. If someone is already making $20/hour they will also require an increase. Oakland has missed out housing development wise in this latest boom. Because of NIMBYISM/Acitivists it is just too difficult to do development here. This has exacerbated the housing crisis which drives ill conceived ideas like this. This is just more poorly thought out policy and not addressing the underlying challenges. Oakland needs to address it's housing shortage now. According to MTC Oakland is 100 years behind the housing goal of 2040 thanks to the difficulties of building here. 660,000 more people will move to the area over the next 25 years. Where will they all go?
