This remarkably bleak documentary achieves its power from the thwarted aspirations of a pale, waif-like, thirteen-year-old girl from Siberia named Nadya Vall, one of many Russian teens (and pre-teens) who leave home to seek their fortune in Tokyo as models for fashion magazines. Running parallel to her story is the career of Ashley Arbaugh, a dispirited former child model who now works for an agency recruiting skinny hopefuls from poor places like Nadya’s hometown of Novosibirsk – she’s a possible vision of the girl’s future. As a mini-primer on the niceties of the global economy, David Redmon and Ashley Sabin’s cool, calculated doc is hard to fault, but equally difficult to watch with any detachment. So on that level it’s successful. Produced, directed, photographed, and edited by the team of Redmon and Sabin (Mardi Gras: Made in China). (77 min.)
