Rated PG-13 · 90 minutes · 2012

Flamingly red-haired Elle Fanning makes a terrific splash as a nervous London teenager, circa 1962, who’s preoccupied not only by her coming of age but about the impending threat of nuclear war. The plot seems to dissolve before our eyes, but writer-director Sally Potter and her ingénue capture the rapture of the wonder years with ease in a rush of impressions and showboat performances. All the while the mood is pure English kitchen-sink, only with good dental work and glamorous faces — Alessandro Nivola and Christina Hendricks as Ginger’s feuding parents. High kudos as well to Alice Englert as Ginger’s promiscuous best friend Rosa, and Annette Bening, Timothy Spall, and Oliver Platt as Ginger’s bohemian grownup friends. (90 min.)
