Documentary, Music
The life and times, but mostly the zany high spirits, of punk-rock cult superhero Iggy Pop, carved from a burning chunk of magma by the equally cultish filmmaker Jim Jarmusch. From his iggy-nominious beginnings in Ann Arbor, Michigan to his frenzied stage antics with the Stooges to his enshrinement in the rock ‘n’ roll pantheon, Iggy turned three-chord, two-minute wonders like “I Wanna Be Your Dog” and “No Fun” into hyperactive theater of the absurd for his adoring fans in the mosh pits. Jarmusch’s song-and-image flip-chart pastiche ranges from Howdy Doody to the confessions of his former band mates, with astoundingly raw home-movie and concert clips. A blazingly clear portrait of an era, narrated by the man himself, seated on an antique throne amid his memories (108 min).
