Get to Know Your Brain! Expo

When: Sat., March 29, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. 2014
Price: free
When Barb Puder’s husband was diagnosed with a brain tumor more than twenty years ago, she was clueless about the inner workings of the body’s most complex organ. Wanting to learn more, she went back to school, became a doctor, and got her Ph.D in neuroscience. Now, she devotes her time to making sure others don’t suffer from the same ignorance by hosting the annual Get to Know Your Brain expo. During the event, which this year will be held at Samuel Merritt University’s Health Education Center (400 Hawthorne Ave., Oakland) on Sunday, kids and adults can examine a sheep’s brain, learn the intricacies of the human spinal cord, and gain practical tips including how to choose a properly fitting bike helmet. Scholars will also discuss strategies for thinking sharply and reducing stress, and discuss topics such as whether doing crosswords actually prevents senility and how to stop your mind from wandering at work.
