Gerard Howland

When: Fri., Dec. 9, 8-10 p.m. 2011
Macropolus.org

Gerard Howland may have made his name as the creator of larger-than-life attractions -- including several sets for the San Francisco Opera and the iconic Coke bottle at AT&T Park -- but now he's turned toward books with a new graphic novel, Dr. Macropolous, from which he'll read at Julie's Coffee and Tea Garden (1223 Park St., Alameda) on Friday, Dec. 9. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the book, whose illustrations will also be mounted at Julie's for the month of December, is aesthetically lush, thematically grandiose, and epic -- even operatic -- in every way. 8 p.m., free. 510-865-2385 or JuliesTea.com
