Re: “Marion Nestle: Embrace "Organic," Even If It's Been Co-Opted

Nowhere in your story does it mention that the Organic Rules were vetted through the Organic community prior to the USDA final rule. In fact most of the people who conplain about organics did not take the time to work on the regulations. There is a certification exclusion for small growers, $5,000.00 gross. This level was set in the 90's so an increase to $10,000.00 indexed for inflation would be a good idea. Also there is cost sharing for certification available to many small farmers. But in my 20 year experience in Organics most farmers who btich about paperwork do not follow organic rules to letter of the law. The certification paperwork is basically just a business plan, so I do question why anyone in the business of farming would not want to plan for financial success. To be truly sustainable a farmer has to stay in business.
