George Cables Benefit

When: Sat., Dec. 8, 1-3:30 p.m. 2007
Price: $30

In the '70s and '80s, San Francisco pianist George Cables was the first choice for nearly everyone in jazz who came to town, and his insightful playing can be found on dozens of CDs by a who's-who of jazz greats. He was also the regular pianist of saxophonist Art Pepper in his final years. Cables recently underwent a liver and kidney transplant and is on the mend, but won't be able to work for at least six months. To help with his living expenses, some friends have organized a fundraiser at Yoshi's on Saturday afternoon. The only question is how they will all fit onstage in just two-and-a-half hours, with a lineup that would shame many jazz festivals: Bobby Hutcherson, Gary Bartz, Angela Wellman, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Mary Stallings, Babatunde Lea, Calvin Keys, YassirChadly, KhalilShaheed and the Mo'Rockin Project, Deszon Claiborne, Vince Lateano, Jeff Chambers, and many more. Saturday, Dec.8, 1-3:30 p.m., $ or 510- 238-9200.
