If you imagine the Russian political situation in the post-Soviet 1990s as chaotic and dangerous, you should see what a Moscow advertising agency in the same era was like. Filmmaker Viktor Ginzburg takes us there, dizzyingly, in the adventures of one Babylen Tatarsky (Vladimir Epifantsev), a loaded-for-bear young businessman eager to take advantage of the “gold rush” atmosphere of newfound Wild West profit-making. A magic mushroom episode leads to a Parliament cigarette ad campaign, and Babylen’s fortunes proceed from there, amid gangsters, drug dealers, and clueless capitalists with guns, always drunk. Rhapsodic and weirdly funny. Screenplay by Viktor and Djina Ginzburg, from the novel by Viktor Pelevin. (112 min.)
Cast: Vladimir Epifancev and Mihail Efremov
