Re: “One of Oakland's Most Historic Figures Was Also Horribly Racist

Jack London wasn't perfect, but this is a terribly one-sided article. Jack London was raised the first years of his life by Jennie Prentiss, a black woman who had been born into slavery. She took him to church, the First African Methodist Episcopal church in Oakland, and he later donated a large sum to the church. Many of the newspaper articles he's slammed for are actually more balanced than the headlines (written by the newspaper editors) for them would suggest.

Re: “Secret Staircases to the Past

While I wish they had the money to move faster, the city repaired the Bonham Way steps and did a major update to the Davidson Way steps, both off of Grand Avenue.

Re: “Best Organization for Group Walks

Thank you! But it's not just me: Paul Rosenbloom, Chris Kidd, Dan Schulman, Neal Parish and others are part of Oakland Urban Paths, too (Paul and Dan founded OUP)

Re: “East Bay Bike Routes for Urban Explorers

If the 5 Historic Houses bike tour isn't long enough, you can make it a 6 house tour and start at the Dunsmuir-Hellman mansion.

Re: “Staircases to Heaven

Charles Fleming, the author of Secret Stairs: East Bay originally got into walking stairs in LA because of health problems. Also I wanted to point out that Oakland Urban Paths ( does walks on the stairways and pathways around Oakland every 2nd Saturday. Some OUP folks test-walked routes for Fleming's book.

(thanks to Zaineb for helping me de-confuse myself on my EBX accounts)

re: #9, what is the current state of Brothers Brewing Co. of Oakland? Website appears broken. But they were founded back in 1997.

Re: “High Tea at the Pardee Home: A Hidden Gem

I'm told there are two small errors: (1) the "house" tea is $15, not $10 (but does include the house tour, too) (2) the animal head is an elk, not a deer.
