Re: “Berkeley High May Cut Out Science Labs

hmm i have been looking for more info on this, and it looks like some labs will still be taught (as it's required for courses to qualify as "college prep") but it will be taken out of normal class time instead of tacked on the beginning/ending of the school day. While perhaps unfortunate, that doesn't seem particularly unreasonable to me. Bad job on Eric Klein for not including this in the article.
There's a lot more details at Berkeleyside http://www.berkeleyside.com/2009/12/11/end…

Re: “Berkeley High May Cut Out Science Labs

This makes me so sad. For one thing, it implicitly gives up on low-achieving minority students. For another, I think science labs may actually be the most vital component of secondary education. Where else do students have a chance to really apply critical thinking skills? Science labs make students question a premise and see if it truly matches the evidence. Unlike in other fields, they don't have to have a whole lot of background knowledge or resources to do this at a basic level. I find the idea that these skills are less useful for black or Latino students than minority students racist and depressing.
