Gavin Turek at The New Parish

Los Angeles singer Gavin Turek’s 2015 single “Frontline” is an homage to the late, great Donna Summer. It has the upbeat, feel-good glow of 1979-era disco clubs — she even looks like a ’70s disco singer. But the B-side to “Frontline” was the real gem. “Don’t Fight It” retains the disco ingredients that make “Frontline” so danceable, but has elements of ’80s electro-funk and ’90s neo-soul. It’s no wonder that Turek is becoming a rising singer and in-demand collaborator, having worked with Mayer Hawthorne and TOKiMONSTA. Her primary influences are pretty obvious: Michael Jackson, Prince, and Diana Ross, but Turek doesn’t stick to simply recreating these artists’ brilliant work. She may get the “modern-day disco queen” label attached to her, but with the two EPs she’s released this year, she’s shown that she knows how to use disco as a reference point rather than as an excuse to do the retro-revival routine.
