Gary Snyder

When: Thu., March 5, 12:10 p.m. and Fri., Nov. 13, 4:30 p.m. 2009
Price: free

Fifty years ago this fall, a small Japanese press published the first poetry collection of an obscure UC Berkeley graduate student. The student was Gary Snyder; the book was Riprap. Its Buddhist-influenced ruminations on nature, freedom, and the inevitability of change helped launch the Beat movement. Snyder headlines a fiftieth-anniversary celebration at UC Berkeley's Doe Library on Friday, Nov. 13. 4:30 p.m., free. English.Berkeley.edu
