Gary Numan

When: Tue., Sept. 3, 7 p.m. 2013
Price: $27
VH1 would have you believe Gary Numan is a one-hit wonder (it listed his 1979 song “Cars” as #21 on the “Top 50 Greatest One Hit Wonders”), but his legacy shouldn’t be reduced to having one hit in America. The pioneering synth-pop artist, who had multiple hits in his native UK, will release his twentieth studio album in October and go on tour with Nine Inch Nails this fall — at the personal invitation of Trent Reznor. Reznor credits Numan for making him pick up a synthesizer, and artists including Prince and Lady Gaga have cited him as an influence. Numan’s approach to New Wave was colder and darker than many of his pop counterparts, and it paved the way for the metal-tinged, industrial dance sound he established in the Nineties, as well as for darkwave artists like Cold Cave, who will open for Numan at the Oakland Metro (630 3rd St., Oakland). It’s guaranteed to be a goth dance party with plenty of noisy experimentation.
