the un charter of human rights, the un genocide convention, the documents on the rights of the child--------------------- just these three off the top of my head tell me that berkeley as a city[forget john yoo, that's a u.c. problem, jurisdiction-wise] has a big-time task ahead of itself. just on human rights: how will it apply to affordable housing for the poorest of the poor and the homeless? will the berkeley police be held accountable for any misconduct towards its citizens? what about the quality of education? juvenile justice? the protection of women from a lot of things? divestment from israel [and for that matter the u.s. and others] on the grounds of practices of war crimes and genocide?

the passage of this city law has great potential of showing by example, to the extent that it is taken seriously and not turned into a circus of political correctness.
