For the past five years, the Paso Robles-based Garagiste Wine Festival has celebrated, and shined a spotlight on, California’s wealth of so-called garagiste wines, which take their name after a group of French winemakers who popularized a style of small-production, limited-edition wines — wine that was, in some cases, literally made in a garage. The year’s “northern” edition, which will be held at the Marriott City Center (1001 Broadway, Oakland), marks the first time the festival has ever come to the Bay Area. What that means for the East Bay wine enthusiast: a chance to try about a hundred rare, exceedingly hard-to-find California wines made by small-batch producers — defined for this purpose as winemakers making fewer than 1,500 cases a year. Part of the proceeds go toward a scholarship fund for Cal Poly’s wine and viticulture department.
