Twenty years ago in the small village of Pengosekan in Bali, a forward-thinking dance ensemble was formed called Çudamani. The philosophy that guides the dance connects the spiritual and the social in unique ways. The dances and the music have roots in Bali that go back decades, but at the same time are innovative, cutting edge, and creative. The 24-member ensemble will be embarking on a special 20th anniversary tour this year. The range of the instrumentation includes flutes to gongs, with dancers who have incredible virtuosity of range and motion. The Berkeley performance is unique for this tour as it will feature premieres by performers I Dewa Putu Berata and I Wayan Sudiarsa, as well as the debut of Dewa Ayu Larassanti and I Putu Wibi, who will be performing “Oleg Tambulilingan,” which is considered one of Bali’s most difficult masterpieces.
