Gabby Rivera, Helen Phillips, and Sarah Gailey

When: Sat., July 13, 7-9:30 p.m. 2019
Price: $5 to $20 sliding scale
Although Marvel Comics’ America Chavez (AKA Miss America) was introduced in the limited series Vengeance by Joe Casey and Nick Dragotta in 2011, writer, speaker, and LGBTQ advocate Gabby Rivera brought the new dimensions to the character that has made her a role model for LGBTQ youth. Rivera, author of the young adult title, Juliet Takes A Breath, unapologetically fashioned Miss America as a Latinx lesbian with more than a mind on truth, justice, and the American way by talking about issues of race, gender, and social justice in a way rarely seen in the world of comics — or anywhere else, for that matter. Reading with Helen Phillips and Sarah Gailey at the series Writers With Drinks, Rivera will give insight to the creator of this one-of-kind super-hero and symbol of empowerment. Age 21 and over.
