G-Eazy & Friends Holiday Bash

When: Wed., Dec. 28, 9 p.m. 2011
Price: $10-$50

G-Eazy may have honed his skills on the cold, rough streets of Berkeley, but lately he's started waxing sentimental. Look no further than the young rapper's latest video, a spinoff of the famous doo-wop tune "Runaround Sue," by Dion & the Belmonts -- with the sample left nearly unadulterated. In the video, G-Eazy (whose real name is Gerald Earl Gillum) woos the town heartbreaker from the screen of a hulky Fifties-style television set, referring to her as "a Mary Tyler Moore with more ass." Even more daring is the rapper's song "Mercedes Benz (The American Dream)," which filches its backing track from the famous Janis Joplin tune of the same name. Eazy alters the lyrics to make them about avarice rather than asceticism, but he still shows a degree of self-irony: And all the moms love me now for sampling Joplin/I'm sticking with my team, I'm the rap John Stockton. Now that's adorable. He performs at The New Parish (579 18th St., Oakland) on Wednesday, Dec. 28. 9 p.m., $10-$50.
