Adam Sandler plays a super-successful stand-up comic named George whose celebrity has left him so alone that he has nobody to confide in about the rare blood disease that will likely kill him. Cue Ira (Seth Rogen), a young, going-nowhere comedian. George takes the guy under his wing, and a bond begins to form that offers up some interesting commentary about fame and success. Mostly, it’s a coming-of-age story for Ira. Funny People isn’t always funny (though it is, a lot), and it’s too long by thirty minutes, but it’s definitely writer-director Judd Apatow’s most emotionally ambitious work to date. There’s an earnestness here that’s rare in comedies these days (146 min.).
