Fruit-Carving Class 

When: Saturdays, 10:30 a.m. Continues through Dec. 4 2010
Price: $35 plus $10 materials fee per class

The carving of fresh fruit into the shapes of animals, flowers, and more is a remarkable Chinese art form dating back to the Tang Dynasty (618-906 CE). Starting on Saturday, Oct. 30, master fruit carver and Culinary Arts Institute graduate Jimmy Zhang, winner of many fruit-carving championships in China, offers a six-Saturday fruit-carving class at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center (388 9th St., Oakland). 10:30 a.m., $35 per class, plus $10 materials fee per class (first class is free for new students).
