In a hardscrabble corner of upstate New York near the Canadian border, a broke and battered white solo mom (character actor supreme Melissa Leo) joins forces with her Native American counterpart, another wronged mother (stoical Misty Upham), to smuggle immigrants in the trunk of a car through the Mohawk Nation and across the frozen St. Lawrence River. This leads to trouble. It also, in writer-director Courtney Hunt’s beautifully paced and thrillingly acted social drama, leads to one of the very best of the “border” films crowding international screens (97 min.).
