Romantic comedy
A funny thing happens with this seemingly lightweight TV-sitcom-style ensemble piece about three thirtyish New York City couples: it grows before our eyes into something deeper and more satisfying than a standard chick flick. That’s a tribute to actress-writer-director Jennifer Westfeldt (Kissing Jessica Stein), in the role of a yuppie named Julie, who arranges to have a baby with her friend Jason (Adam Scott from Parks and Recreation and Our Idiot Brother) without getting married, and to split child-rearing duties. We can see the denouement coming, but along the way Westfeldt, Scott, Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig, Chris O’Dowd, Maya Rudolph, and Edward Burns are given plenty of room to characterize, plus intelligent dialogue. The strategy pays off. (100 min.)
