Drama, War
French actor Tahar Rahim gives an understated, affecting performance as Younes, an Arab immigrant petty criminal turned freedom fighter during the German Nazi occupation of Paris in WWII. The crux of the plot — written by director Ismaël Ferroukhi and Alain Michel Blanc — is the rescue of large numbers of Jews and French Resistance members by the rector of the Grand Mosque of Paris, Si Kaddour Ben Ghabrit (veteran player Michael Lonsdale). But the strongest tone is set by Younes’ transformation. The traditional Algerian and Moroccan music is also a major plus. Costarring Mahmoud Shelaby as an Arab singer with more than one secret. Ferroukhi’s drama compares well to Jean-Pierre Melville’s war film Army of Shadows. (99 min.)
