Animated, Comedy
If we had to visualize a completely “typical” Tim Burton movie, in the most sympathetic sense of the term, this black-and-white animated fantasy about a boy who reanimates his dead pet dog — an elaboration and expansion of a 1984 Burton short — would be it. The misadventures of young Victor Frankenstein, his schoolmates, and their pets strike the ideal Burton chord, a combination of grotesquery and humor that’s a hundred times more evocative than a live-action version could ever be. The creature puppet work by Ian Mackinnon and Peter Saunders is exemplary; John August’s screenplay (story by Burton and Leonard Ripps) captures the same innocent spirit of Edward Scissorhands; and there are tributes galore to Burton’s favorite horror films. Starring the voices of Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short, Martin Landau, Winona Ryder, Atticus Shaffer (the Peter-Lorre-ish Edgar), and Charlie Tahan as Victor. Everything the perfect “family horror” movie should be.(87 min.).
