So a lone FBI agent (played by James Van Der Beek), circa 1983, inadvertently opens up the entire secret structure of the Taiwan government? That’s what this canned-looking, arguably relevant drama – we wouldn’t call it much of a “thriller” – would have us believe. Agent Jake Kelly (Van Der Beek) gets sent to Taipei to investigate the murder, in Chicago, of a dissident Taiwanese-American professor. Once there, he learns a few things: Taiwan is feverishly anti-Communist; it’s run by a consortium of gangsters and Nationalist Chinese who use drug money to buy US arms; it suppresses the native Taiwanese population; and it’s mixed up in the Iran-Contra scandal. Balancing all this on the head of a pin is TV move-over director James Kane, working from a scenario crafted by six writers. Make of it what you will (103 min.).
