Greg Kinnear turns in one his most cohesive performances in the true story of Bob Kearns, a naive nice-guy automotive engineer in early-’60s Detroit who gets reamed by Ford Motor Co. over his invention: a variable-speed intermittent windshield wipers. That little gadget is the fulcrum for a deft indictment of the US auto industry, thuggish business practices, and predatory capitalism in general, by producer-turned-director Marc Abraham (Children of Men) and screenwriter Philip Railsback (adapting John Seabrook’s New Yorker article), helped greatly by the character acting of Dermot Mulroney, Mitch Pileggi, Alan Alda, and Tim Kelleher as various Motor City sharks (119 min.).
