Liam Neeson and James Nesbitt give intense performances, almost to the point of hysterics, as a former Protestant militia hit man (Neeson) brought face to face for a “reality” TV show with the younger brother (Nesbitt) of a Catholic man he killed 33 years earlier in the Northern Irish town of Lurgan. Complicating matters is the fact that the younger brother witnessed the shooting — the killer stood before him on the sidewalk and fired through the family’s front window. The screenplay, based on an actual event, was written by Guy Hibbert, whose Omagh remains one of the essential films on the “troubles.” And director Oliver Hirschbiegel (Downfall) frames the emotional confrontation so tightly we feel every trickle of sweat (90 min.).
