Utopia: Forecasting Our Future

Vessel Gallery’s current exhibit takes a look at environmental preservation as artists explore the idea of utopia. In partnership with the recent Global Climate Action Summit and San Francisco’s COAL + ICE exhibit, Utopia: Forecasting Our Future features philosophical and historical ruminations through photography, acrylic ink, weaving, and other works by a slate of predominantly local artists of color: Kim Anno, David Burke, Rubén Salgado Escudero, Dave Young Kim, Hyeyoung Kim, Christy Kovacs, Yuyang Liu, and Cyrus Tilton. “Preserving what we know to be precious, individuals must collectively advance a global, inclusive vision of unity and resect for Mother Nature,” Vessel Gallery owner Lonnie Lee wrote in her curator’s statement. “A collaboration rooted in love and respect for all human life, and reverence for nature, is ultimately the only way to bring us closer to utopia.” Discuss your own vision of utopia — and combatting climate change — at the celebration coinciding with First Friday. — Janelle Bitker
