This energetic documentary profile of the late Nigerian singer/musician Fela Anikulapo Kuti shows us not only his musical life – he helped popularize the Afrobeat style of indigenous African music in the 1980s – but his importance to the Nigerian people. Filmmaker Alex Gibney (Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room) takes advantage of a trove of period newsreel and concert footage to put Fela in context, as a musical, spiritual, and political force in West Africa during one of the region’s most turbulent periods. Sadly, Fela was also notorious as one of the most prominent of the world’s AIDS fatalities. But the performances are what gives the doc its punch (119 min.)
