Fiddler Reception and Klezmer Dance Party

When: Wed., Jan. 8, 9-11 p.m. 2014
Fiddler on the Roof, the musical about a Jewish family struggling to maintain its religious customs in Tsarist Russia, uses comedy and nostalgia to address the timeless theme about maintaining tradition in times of change. It won nine Tony awards and played for almost ten years on Broadway during its first run. This Wednesday, celebrate the iconic play’s fiftieth anniversary with two events in Berkeley. First, warble your heart out at the community sing-along and screening of the play’s 1971 film adaptation at the California Theatre (2113 Kittredge St., Berkeley). Then, head over to the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life (2121 Allston Way) to continue the festivities and hear expert fiddling by the The Veretski Pass trio. After you’ve shown off your best Klezmer dance moves, trade favorite quotes with fellow Fiddler fans as you munch on old country treats from Kenny Hockert’s Old World Food Truck.
