Adventure, Animated, Comedy
Maybe all along Wes Anderson was an animation genius waiting to break out, and perhaps his live-action movies were only rehearsals for this masterful retelling of Roald Dahl’s slender tale of a semi-retired fox (voice of George Clooney) and his animal friends and relations planning one last raid on the ridiculously fortified henhouses and larders of three mean old farmers. Maybe. But there’s no denying that the stop-motion animation, the attention to artistic detail, and the general unpredictability of Fantastic Mr. Fox are triumphant evidence of Anderson’s storytelling talent, and that everything from the supporting voice roles (Bill Murray, Meryl Streep, Willem Dafoe, Michael Gambon, et al.) to the crafty little creatures work like a charm. How can Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums, The Darjeeling Limited) ever go back to ordinary live action? (87 min.).
