Rated PG · 107 minutes · 2009

This remake of the 1980 original follows ten students through four years at the New York Academy of Performing Arts, a high school for actors, dancers, singers, musicians, and ... well, artsy types. At 107 minutes, there’s absolutely no time for character development; if the actor cast in the part doesn’t have a strong enough on-screen presence, they just don’t stand out. Which means nobody really stands out. Everything that made the original edgy and alive, including an R rating, has been watered down into a PG-rated High School Musical knock-off. Considering that the last credit attributed to director Kevin Tancharoen was The Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll, this makes perfect sense.
