Comedy drama
A French character actors’ picnic. The always-magnetic Isabelle Huppert stars in director Luc Bondy’s revival of Pierre de Marivaux’s 18th-century romantic farce about a rich widow (Huppert), her handsome new accountant (Louis Garrel), and the conniving members of her household. Tongues remain firmly in cheeks for everyone in the cast, amid constant intrigue and bouts of buffoonery, but as usual it’s Huppert, as the seemingly oblivious Mme. Araminte, who sets the pace and steals the show. Filmmaker Bondy died during production, and the TV movie was finished by his spouse, writer Marie-Louise Bischofberger. Also with Yves Jacques, Bernard Verley, Manon Combes, Bulle Ogier, Jean-Pierre Malo, and Fred Ulysse. A glittering antique (85 min., 2016, not rated) (K.V.)
