These days, young metal bands are increasingly seeking ways to distinguish themselves -- usually by combining disparate elements on the genre spectrum, like "blackened grind," "psychedelic death," or "doom folk" (okay, that last one is made up, but there's probably some band that'll coin the term sooner or later, if it hasn't already). So it can be tough for bands to produce something truly new-sounding without coming off as gimmicky, especially considering how saturated the market is. Some of its grooves are super deep and grindy; others are more "progressive," technical, and melodic. If the band continues down this path, the results should be interesting. Fallujah plays at The Mutiny (422 W. 2nd St., Antioch) on Sunday, June 13. 7 p.m. 925-755-2900 or
