The trend of Nineties bands getting back together continues, but this reunion deserves your attention — Los Angeles alt-rock band Failure, whose members recently reunited for the first time in sixteen years. The band never gained traction in the mainstream, and didn’t have much support from its label; nonetheless, its distinctive lush, spacey, and heavy sound cultivated a devoted fan base whose continued (and growing) enthusiasm actually prompted the band to get back together, according to an interview with co-founder Greg Edwards on After the band’s breakup in 1997, its members went on to have successful careers: Ken Andrews became a prominent producer and solo artist (ON, Year of the Rabbit), while Edwards formed the noise-pop band Autolux, onetime guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen joined A Perfect Circle and, later, Queens of the Stone Age, and drummer Kellii Scott joined Blinker the Star, Veruca Salt, and Enemy. Failure recently came through town as the opener for Tool in March at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, and is back with two proper headlining shows at The Great American Music Hall (859 O’Farrell St., San Francisco).
