The philosophers interviewed in this documentary are a worldly bunch. Cornel West talks about historians, jazz and blues, Beethoven, and the nature of truth from the back seat of a car. Martha Nussbaum, strolling on Chicago’s lake shore, relates Aristotle’s theory of justice to her notion of supporting human capability. Slavoj Žižek tours a waste disposal site while casting doubt on the cult of ecology. And so forth. Astra Taylor’s Canadian-produced doc listens to the ideas of nine academic thinkers, captured more or less in their native habitats, and the effect is stimulating and provocative (87 min.).
