Evil Dead: The Musical

When: Wednesdays-Saturdays, 7 p.m., Fridays, Saturdays, 10:30 p.m. and Tue., July 1, 7 p.m. Continues through July 26 2008
Price: $25-$30

Although uneven both in essence and execution, Evil Dead: The Musicaloffers enough honestly funny moments to transcend the rough patches -- plus a splatter zone in which you get charged extra to be soaked with gore. George Reinblatt's script and lyrics are made up of painful puns and taglines from the movie trilogy shoehorned in wherever possible, and the music is oddly peppy in muddy, prerecorded Casio accompaniment. The performers are badly miked and become hopelessly muffled with demon masks on, but the visual elements of Jon Tracy's staging are stronger, with walls that come alive and a puppet moose head. Greg Asdourian is hilarious as a stunt double who ambles out in work coveralls to recreate the film's special effects. Michael Scott Wells is a nicely expressive hero, and Jenny Angell has some priceless slapstick as little sister Cheryl, although as a demon she becomes incredibly irritating. Through July 26 at the Campbell Theatre (636 Ward St., Martinez).WillowsTheatre.org or 925-798-1300.
