Drama, Program
German filmmaker Maren Ade’s effective, well-acted character study inhabits a familiar space usually reserved for the French – the stressful vacation in which a relationship unravels in a picturesque setting. An insecure architect named Chris (Lars Eidenger) takes his impulsive, needy girlfriend Gitti (Birgit Minichmayr) to his family’s villa in Sardinia, and they get on each others’ nerves in a slow crescendo. Writer-director Ade makes the most of those small, sandpaper-y everyday irritations that turn bland people mean. With fine support by Hans-Jochen Wagner and Nicole Marischka as the couple Chris and Gitti try so strenuously to avoid (119 min.).
