A lonely widower named Frank (muffled Robert De Niro) goes on a road trip across America to try to reconnect with his estranged children (Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale, Sam Rockwell) in director Kirk Jones’ maudlin, middling remake of the Italian family drama Stanno tutti bene. De Niro never really connects as mild-mannered Frank and the situations are too familiar to have much impact. Only Barrymore, as Frank’s daughter in Las Vegas, projects the emotion that this type of sentimental story demands. It’s surprisingly light on humor, the necessary accompaniment to the tears. Jones adapted the screenplay himself (100 min.).
Director: Meng Zhang
