Adventure, Drama, Thriller
In one way, director Baltasar Kormákur’s mountain-climbing adventure is courageous – unafraid to tackle the issue of reckless amateurs littering the flanks of the world’s highest mountain with their castoff equipment, and losing their lives as well. But it takes more than an expensive cast (Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Jake Gyllenhaal, Emily Watson, Keira Knightley, Robin Wright) to make us feel the exhilaration of one of the world’s great physical challenges. The stunts are good, the scenery magnificent (action scenes shot in Nepal and Italy), but this one, with its alternately corny and moving moments, will have to take its place way back in the mountaineering-movie queue. Written by William Nicholson and Simon Beaufoy, who have done far better work (121 min.).
