Playwright Sarah Ruhl tackles grief and longing in Eurydice, a refreshing play that tells the classic Orpheus myth from the female perspective. Unlike the original, which chronicles Orpheus’ heroic journey to save his wife, this version follows Eurydice as she struggles to remember her past while trapped in the Underworld. To be sure, it’s a less exciting trade-off, but Ruhl’s decision to focus on emotions rather than action results in a nuanced story that is teeming with metaphors and symbolism. Shotgun Players is putting on the production at Ashby Stage in Berkeley (1901 Ashby Ave.), where stage manager Nikita Kadam has impressively transformed the quaint theater into a grungy, industrial warehouse, complete with an elevator and running water — it’s quite a scene to behold. Even in the moments when the story sags, the visual effects keep the production afloat.
