Having experienced nearly everything the author has I can fully relate to this excellent article. Only now I'm facing this very same dilemma as a single parent, having recently separated. Feeding two children under the age of 5, between two households, presents its own challenges. But I have signed up for a local produce box delivery, which will become part of my weekly cooking nights. With time I hope to make regular use of kids/family cookbooks, which you can always check out & try from a library.

I agree that the microwave & processed dinner routine gets depressing and just that: routine. Perhaps the microwave is best reserved for heating slow food components of a meal, as in previously-steamed rice, frozen peas, black lentils, etc.?

My 2-year old son enjoys standing on a step stool and stirring boiling pasta. But I have to get him some child-sized oven mitts for those occasional splashes from the pot, since he can't hold a spoon with the adult ones.
