Re: “Shiny Buildings, Shady Dealings

This is in reply to sflk. The teachers HAVE taken a cut in pay because of the furlough days we took. In addition our last contract has us paying the cost for health insurance for our spouses and children. I experienced a 12% reduction in pay. Only single employees at this point who take Kaiser do not pay. This had the effect of forcing many teachers with families, whose kids would probably attend WCCUSD schools, to stop working in this district, thus increasing the number of single young employees, many Teach for America newbies for whom the District pays barely anything. The same disputed contract vote forced anyone who had stayed here a number of years at a lower salary, to retire in order to keep full health benefits after retirement. We had barely gotten back to even after the 10% paycut agreed to in 1989 after Walter Marks bankrupted the District. So please, don't blame the teachers who pay out of their own pockets for school supplies for your children, and who deplore the huge class sizes in all but core classes (capped at a terrible 38 at that.) We are told to expect class sizes of 50-55 in the high schools this fall until the District will allow principals to hire more full time teachers.
