Re: “The Poison Pill of Proposition 46?

It's so childish when people say, "let's drug test the lawyers!" as though they hold people's lives in their hands in the same way that doctors do. I'm not against drug testing lawyers, but THIS ballot proposition is about patient safety. If you want to drug test lawyers, raise your own money and write your own ballot proposition. Don't try and dilute the importance of this one simply because you have preconceived notions about lawyers and the judicial system. 1000 patients are dying daily from medical errors, this is something we all need to take very seriously!

Prop 46 requires doctors to pay for their own drug testing and are not allowed to pass those costs on to patients or insurance companies. So exactly how is it that this is going to be expensive? Even IF the actual drug testing doesn't work, and I don't believe that to be true, it works as a preventative measure to dissuade doctors from practicing while under the influence the same way driving laws dissuade a lot of people from driving drunk.
