Enkutatash: Ethiopian New Year Festival

When: Sun., Sept. 5, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. 2010

Labor Day weekend typically offers an excuse to get out of town and enjoy the beginnings of an Indian summer somewhere outside the city, but there are plenty of reasons to stick around. Case in point: Enkutatash, the Ethiopian New Year Festival in Berkeley's Martin Luther King Jr. Civic Center Park (2151 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Berkeley) on Sunday, Sept. 5. The festival, which traditionally celebrates the end of the rainy season and the start of the harvest, will offer kids' activities, food and artisan vendors, and other cultural diversions. 11 a.m.-7 p.m., free. 510-268-4770
