Adam, a mild-mannered professor (Jake Gyllenhaal), become more than merely intrigued when he discovers he has an apparent doppelganger, an actor named Anthony (Gyllenhaal as well). But that’s the least disturbing thing about filmmaker Denis Villeneuve’s captivating adaptation of José Saramago’s novel, The Double. Both men’s lives have hidden dimensions, as well as respective blond wives, played by Mélanie Laurent and Sarah Gadon. Villeneuve, the director of Prisoners, gives Enemy a completely different feel, somewhere on the outskirts of Canadian compatriot David Cronenberg, where dreams have as much power as waking “reality.” Javier Gullón shares screenwriting credits with director Villeneuve (90 min.).
