Action, Crime drama
Los Angeles police officers Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña shoot, punch, and overact till the cows come home in this speeded-up contemporary policier by filmmaker David Ayer. The action is bracing and virtually non-stop as Brian (Gyllenhaal) and his partner Zee (Peña) race from one grisly, hectic, South Central crime scene to the next on the trail of a drug cartel, and it’s the local color in the hood that makes the cop-worshiping drama tick. What writer-director Ayer’s scenario lacks is a rotten cop for our heroes to react against. All the best LAPD movies (Colors, L.A. Confidential, Rampart) have them — but frequent LA crime chronicler Ayer (Training Day, Dark Blue, Harsh Times, Street Kings) decides to let the whole city be the bad guy, with nervous handheld POV camera shots galore. Not quite the perfect cop movie, but a worthy stab at it. Costarring Anna Kendrick, Natalie Martinez, Cle Shaheed Sloan, and Maurice Compte. (109 min.)
