Documentarian Werner Herzog visits Antarctica and endows the frozen terrain with his patented fundamental uneasiness. At the international scientific community of McMurdo Station, we tag along on “happy camper” survival classes, scuba diving underneath the ice cap, a trip to the core of Mt. Erebus volcano, and, despite the filmmaker’s protestations, an investigation into the issue of insanity in penguins. As always, Herzog’s wonderful voice lends an amused other-worldliness to the most mundane events. Fine music by Henry Kaiser and David Lindley (99 min.).
