Re: “The Oakland Fence Saga

As usual, the City of Oakland continues to cut off its nose to spite its face. If that great neighbor does remove the fence and someone gets hurt; our taxes will pay for the lawsuit. If there is erosion, our taxes will pay to fix the problem with a possible lawsuit as well. As usual, bureaucracy wins over common sense. Instead of paying or receiving monies, the City should call it even and leave the fence with proper encroachment permit.

Re: “UC Berkeley Researchers: Oakland's Homeless Camp Policies Are Contradictory, Harmful

Most crimes are committed by those who have homes. Homeowners that are under the impression that homelessness causes crimes are either misinformed or like to create a red herring for their property values. People of color who moved into nice neighborhoods (AKA rich white) were blamed for lower property values. Now it's a war against our most vulnerable population. Shame on you complaining homeowners!

Re: “Letters for the Week of September 2, 2015

Although there are no articles in this issue on bicyclists and motorists, I'd like to comment on my observations as both of these.

Bicyclists need to fear auto, bus and truck drivers. Either the motorists don't know the new law which requires keeping three feet between their vehicles and bicyclists (or road bike paths) or they choose to be arrogant and think the road ONLY belongs to them.

The other observation is that many bicyclists don't care about their brains and won't wear helmets.

Why these seeming divergent observations? If a motorist hits you (I've been hit twice in downtown Oakland) because s/he can't share the road properly, and your head hits the pavement; you will have brain damage or die.

BTW the motorists who don't like when bicyclists don't obey the laws need to know that statistically (ratio!) more cars kill people than bicyclists.

Re: “OPD Improves Handling of Protests

I really would prefer that everyone refer to the looters and vandals as such. They are NOT protestors - they are opportunistic criminals. Finally, I take umbrage to the BPD spokesperson stating that they weren't prepared for the protest earlier this month. They've had since the Occupy demonstrations began to prepare for crowd behavior during street protests. Shame on them! The training unit and senior management should be disciplined for this lack of professionalism and inability to lead. Anyone could have seen this potential coming.

Re: “Updated: Compromise Deal Reached on Oakland Garbage Contract

I am so frustrated with our current waste management company. They locked out workers and refuse to provide a real professional service. Garbage collectors leave bins blocking sidewalks and streets. I've seen their trucks driving around with waste flying out of the trucks' collection bins, thus trashing our streets. The same company in Livermore provides a great service and leaves the bins where they found them. They don't care about Oakland. All of their paid signature collectors lied about the referendum.

This is not the proper use of WM's time. As an Oaklander, I demand better service and more care about our waste than they have provided to date.
